Leading Isle of Man law firm creates new Dispute Resolution team after Legal 500 success

Quinn Legal has announced the formation of their new Dispute Resolution team, headed up by Ashley Kneale. The new team combines the Family and Litigation departments and aims to look for different angles in pursuing clients’ interests.

The new Dispute Resolution team is made up of dedicated and efficient advocates who aim to put clients at the centre of their service.

This announcement follows Quinn Legal’s recognition of excellence in the 2020 Legal 500 rankings. The Isle of Man-based legal firm’s expertise in Dispute Resolution was recognised in the latest Legal 500 ranking as a Tier Two provider, with Ashley recognised as a ‘Next Generation Partner.’

The directory highlights practice area teams which are providing the most cutting edge and innovative legal advice, and client feedback is a crucial part of the thorough and independent process. This includes interviews with clients and peers as well as information provided by Quinn Legal itself.

As a result of this recognition, consolidation of the Family and Litigation departments was identified as an opportunity to better meet the needs of Isle of Man residents.

“We are all thrilled to be part of a team that now better meets the demands of our Isle of Man clients. Our new Dispute Resolution team share the same pragmatic view on resolving disputes and getting the best possible outcome for each client.”

Ashley Kneale, Head of Dispute Resolution

The consolidated team now includes recognised criminal advocate, Jim Travers, experienced commercial litigator, Stephen Coren, and family advocate, Claire Clampton.

Claire recently contributed towards a global family law publication, sharing her knowledge and experience of acting on family matters in the Isle of Man.

Quinn Legal partners with CoinCorner to become first Isle of Man law firm to accept Bitcoin payments

Quinn Legal has become the first Isle of Man based firm to accept Bitcoin payment from clients. A newly announced integration with Bitcoin payment company CoinCorner will allow Quinn Legal’s clients to make Bitcoin payments directly via the legal firm’s website.

This move came in response to client feedback and offers a different and highly secure way to pay for legal services.

As a firm, Quinn Legal prides itself on being different from other legal firms. Lawyers are usually change-averse, but Quinn Legal recognises the popularity and benefits of cryptocurrency payments. Partnering with fellow Isle of Man based Bitcoin exchange CoinCorner makes the legal firm the first on the island to accept the payment.

James Quinn, founder and CEO of Quinn Legal, said: “This new payment method capability signals the start of our plans for the new decade. We will be focusing on our existing areas of expertise and finding new ways to support our clients. With Bitcoin payments, we can support many of our clients in the financial technology and business sectors, as well as those who are invested in less traditional currency.”

He added: “We felt confident partnering with CoinCorner for this important integration, as they are one of the first Bitcoin businesses in the world to fall under any form of legislation as a Designated Business. This means that they are overseen by the Isle of Man Financial Service Authority, giving our clients peace of mind and assurance that their payments will be safe, secure, and immune from direct exposure to Bitcoin price volatility. At Quinn Legal, our clients will always be at the forefront of everything we do.”

Bitcoin is a global digital currency which is sent electronically. It can be sent from person to person around the world and without the need for a middleman. It also cannot be printed or reproduced, with only 21 million Bitcoins ever able to be created, making Bitcoin a highly secure and traceable form of currency.

UK Bitcoin exchange CoinCorner provided the integration for Quinn Legal’s website via their CoinCorner Checkout service. CoinCorner, founded in 2014, is a leading global Bitcoin exchange with a team of 15 people, supporting almost 200,000 customers in over 45 countries.

Sam Tipper, Business Development Lead at CoinCorner, commented: “It’s been fantastic to work with and support Quinn Legal in accepting Bitcoin invoice payments from their clients via CoinCorner Checkout. The news marks significant progress for both CoinCorner and Quinn Legal; showing recognition for Bitcoin as an alternative way of paying for traditional services and further positioning Quinn Legal as a leader in the legal sector, continuously adapting to meet the needs of modern customers.”

He added: “CoinCorner Checkout is available to businesses in the Isle of Man, UK and most of Europe. If you’d like to know more about how simple it is to start accepting Bitcoin, please get in touch by visiting CoinCorner.com/Checkout.”

Quinn Legal will talk at ICSA event to shed light on the importance of charity governance

As a philanthropic nation, the Isle of Man has a vast volume of charities. In fact, there’s estimated to be around 500 Manx charities – compared to just 3830 employing businesses. With the passing into law of the Charities Registration and Regulation Act 2019, many charities on the Isle of Man are taking stock of what they do, how they are governed, and what the future may bring. Considering this, Quinn Legal’s Peter Cannell has been invited by ICSA to speak at their next event ‘Charities: What are they good for?’

The lunchtime talk is aimed at those working in the charity sector in the Isle of Man and also in the field of governance. Although the event is being organized by ICSA, it is open to non ICSA members for just £10.

Peter Cannell, Advocate and Data Practitioner here at Quinn Legal, will take us on a journey through what ‘charities’ are, the importance of good governance to charities operating today, especially with the passing of the Act, and will finish with some predicted challenges the charity sector may face in the future.

Recently, charities have received a bad name, with stories of abuse of their services users, aggressive fundraising, and apparent disregard of data protection. Oxfam is, unfortunately, one of the charities whose governance has recently been called into question, leading to damaging negative press, huge revenue reduction, and redundancies in the UK.

However, charity is a fundamental part of our civil society, with supporters and volunteers going the extra mile to make a difference. Peter is a passionate believer in the benefits that a vibrant charity sector can bring to society. He brings this passion to many of his clients in the charity sector, being well placed to advise on corporate and commercial matters.

“The vast third sector in the Isle of Man is impacting a lot of positive change, for many causes. We don’t want to see their good work undermined by poor governance. As a law firm our advice is protected by legal privilege, meaning that our team will guide you through challenges to get back on track.”

Peter Cannell

Peter, who is both an Advocate and a Chartered Governance Professional, has worked in the third sector throughout his life. Before returning the Isle of Man in 1995, Peter was the full time (unpaid) group Company Secretary for the charity Operation Mobilisation UK.  Peter is a sought-after speaker as he brings his knowledge and passion to every subject he talks about.

The ‘Charities: What are they good for?’ event will be held at the Claremont Hotel at 12pm on Tuesday 12th November. Tickets are available via http://bit.ly/charity-talk

Quinn Legal dramatically increase the volume of AML courses to meet the needs of the Manx business community

Manx business owners are under pressure to complete anti money laundering (AML) training each year. Because of this, we’ve increased our AML schedule in order to meet demand and support businesses who are trying to complete training before the end of the calendar year.

Organisations – and employees within them – have a legal responsibility to make sure they cannot possibly become involved in money laundering activities. A big part of this is training staff members on the definition, the signs, and appropriate actions to take.

However, arranging training for a large group of people can often be a time-consuming and frustrating task. We are offering comprehensive AML training courses which will ensure that your staff members are trained in just one session, saving business owners a potential headache.

Click here to book your place on a Quinn Legal AML training course.

We have increased the number of sessions available until the end of the year to ensure that all Isle of Man businesses have the opportunity to attend.

“Our training courses have been well received since launching earlier this year. We understand the pressures facing regulated businesses and want to do what we can to support them.”

Stephen Savage, Head of Business

“Being able to offer an easy solution to a time-consuming task is something we’re really proud of, which is why we’ve designed AML courses which cover what staff need to know and allow businesses to meet their AML training obligations.”

The courses cater for all members of staff in a regulated business, from an AML refresher through to an Advanced AML course with an in-depth look at the legislation, regulation and code.

AML courses will be held every Thursday at the Quinn Legal office in Douglas. We also offer inhouse options to make life easier for companies who have a large volume of staff to train.
